Career Development? Job Search? Tips
1. Make dua

2.  Identify what the employer needs and how you can prove to them you can offer it to them!

Most companies look for individuals who are eager to learn new things, show initiative and come up with innovative new ideas.  You must stand out from rest of the applicants.  Ability to work under pressure and good time management skills are good to state.

3. Confidence if and when you get called down to a interview. Few things you should do when going for a interview:

  • Research:  Come up with a few questions about their company/technology that impresses the interviewer into realizing that your actually interested in that particular work and specifically THEIR company. (they would prefer hiring someone who wants them, as compared to someone who just wants any other company, etc)
  • Have a checklist prepared ( I did this, alhamdulilaah it works!) You basically in very few words, point forms, write down all the main things that you have that they need! And highlight a project you worked on, that explains how you dealt with main key task/experience that will be an asset for this job. Submit this to them before they begin the interview. They will already be shocked that you made it easier for them.
  • If they ask you regarding a language/technology or some skill you dont have. "Do you know xyz language? Have you got any experince in blah blah" … DO NOT say "NO" …rephrase that into "Unfortunately, I havent had the oppurtunity to ….yet. However, I'd love to learn"…its researched, and employers tend to just consider NO as a very bad answer and automatically might think like ooh this person is no good. But for soem reason if you rephrase that, into …i havent yet….it doesnt have the same level of negative effect on them.
  • Lastly, dont come off as I love you and I want this job. Act cool. Even if you want the job, remember you dont know if its good for you. Only Allaah swt knows which job is best for you and who should be blessed enough to have your services.

4. After the interview, jot down few things you liked, few things you disliked and few things your not sure of about them/the job. Also, any thing you failed to mention to them at the interview but you feel you should have: write those down too. After a day or two. Write up a thank you letter with regards to the interview and send it off to them highligting these things (pick and choose only important stuff dont write an essay size letter!)

5. Try applying: If your CS/IT, apply into TELUS mobility, I heard they have lot of f/t positions right now. I personally like IBM because of their flexibility, so try applying there. Also, RIM, Oracle, I dont like microsoft, but you can also try there…well actually just apply wherever you want. Insha'Allaah whatever is best, may Allaah make it happen always. Make dua you get that and be content with Allaah's will. Honestly, all my siblings have had experiences when they thought a really really decent job was lost or something, and then few days later Allaah swt sent a better oppurtunity to them. So trust Allaah swt.
